The activities are accessible from both the apartment in Nazaré and the house in Salir do Porto.

We have an extensive digital brochure for our guests that we try to keep up-to-date.

Food & Drink

Portugal has a rich and varied food culture. It is a country by the sea, so fish and seafood play an important role in the kitchen. Bacalhau (cod) and roasted sardines are specialties. The desserts are sweet and cinnamon is used abundantly. Be sure to try the pastel de nata, a pastry consisting of puff pastry and a sweet filling.

Portuguese wines are delicious. The red wines in particular have character and are not very expensive. Also taste a vinho verde. It is a young wine (‘verde’ means green). They are usually slightly sparkling white wines from the northwest of Portugal. Red varieties are also drunk locally. Porto, a fortified wine from the Douro Valley near Porto, is of course very well known. But Moscatel de Setúbal is certainly also a discovery. In Óbidos you can taste Ginja, a cherry liqueur.

Sports / Activities / Adventure

Surfing is of course the sport of choice in Nazaré, which is known for its highest waves in the world. There are several surf schools, also for beginners. There are often competitions from November to February. You can of course also practice other water sports: jet skiing, banana boating at sea, diving, kayaking, paddleboarding...

The bay between Salir do Porto and São Martinho offers various possibilities for children.

A beautiful wellness centre is located on the beach of Nazaré, near the harbour channel. There is also a cocktail and coffee bar where you can enjoy a nice drink at sunset.

From the harbour of Nazaré you can take boat trips where you can spot dolphins. The animals will come and swim around the boats playing.

Other popular activities are 4x4 tours and fishing at sea. In the centre of Nazaré there is an arena where you can see the matadors at work. If you are an adrenaline seeker, you can get behind the wheel of a kart in Caldas da Rainha.

Beaches around Salir do Porto

Near the holiday villa you will find the sandy beach of Salir do Porto / São Martinho do Porto along a bay, shielded from the Atlantic Ocean by rocks. There is a boardwalk from Salir do Porto to São Martinho do Porto, a beautiful walk of 20 to 30 minutes. In Salir do Porto you will find the highest dune in Portugal, just 900 meters from the holiday home. The beaches along the bay are very child-friendly with a play platform on the sea in the summer.

At the beach of Salgado you can find dozens of fossils. Near Salir do Porto you will find dinosaur footprints in the rocks.

The bay of Óbidos in Foz do Arelho is also worth a visit. You can practice various water sports over there and there is also an extensive nature reserve with rare birds, plants and sea animals.

A little further away you will find the Peniche peninsula, with beautiful beaches and even sand dunes. From Peniche, nature excursions depart to the uninhabited islands (the Berlingas) nearby.

There are various hiking trails in the area and also many opportunities for geocaching. You can also go to the tourist offices for hiking trails.

Beaches around Nazaré

Near the apartment in Nazaré there are two sandy beaches: Costa de Prata and Praia do Norte. The beach of Nazaré is long and wide. Ideal for a day at the beach with various water sports.

Praia da Nazaré - Costa de Prata - is the main beach of Nazaré. It is sheltered behind a high cliff so that it is protected from the wind. The beach is supervised in the summer so that you can swim in the ocean when the conditions are good. In high season there are tent-shaped beach cabins that you can rent to store your things or to sit in the shade. The wide beach - with fine sand - is also popular with the Portuguese. In the summer months many activities are organized on the beach, also for young people. It is touristy and can be busy. You can easily reach the beach from the apartment via the cog railway (4 minutes away on foot). The exit of the cog railway is only a 3 minute walk from the beach.

Praia do Norte is an – almost deserted – beach. There are no restaurants and it is less crowded, nature in all its splendor. You can reach the beach on foot from the apartment. It is a 15-minute walk. Please note that the ocean can be very rough. The World Surfing Championship is held in Nazaré. The large waves at this location are unique in the world due to an interplay of wind, temperature and currents caused by the underwater Canyon of Nazaré that extends deep and far into the Atlantic Ocean.

Culture

Óbidos is a pleasant medieval town half an hour from Nazaré and twenty minutes from Salir do Porto. The walled city stands out when you pass by along the highway. When you approach Óbidos, you immediately see the impressive aqueduct. The town is car-free but can be very busy. A walk on the walls of the city wall is quite an experience: narrow wall, battlements on one side and the depth of the town on the other side. You can play an escape game in one of the towers.

The monastery of Alcobaça (16 km - 20 min) - from the 12th century is on the World Heritage List. You can also find World Heritage in Tomar and Batalha.

In Fátima you will find a place of pilgrimage, which can be compared to Lourdes.
